I’m here today speaking with the lovely Olivera about her personal style, fashion inspiration, and jewelry pieces. Olivera is currently wearing an eye-catching cotton black Catherine Malandrino skirt with a semi sheer silk Madewell blouse.
Olivera is a frequent Buffalo Exchange shopper and Brooklyn resident. She does a lot of freelance work in apparel design and loves to travel. Her personal style would be best described as an androgynous, bohemian, eclectic goddess. She is a free spirit who treasures bold statement jewelry and unique pieces. “I really love mixing feminine pieces and adding a touch of masculinity to my look,” she says. Her style icons are Keith Richards, Isabella Blow, and Frida Khalo. Shopping, exotic travel, and tango are amongst some of her greatest passions, “I’m all about the textures, details, and colors. I find beauty in grocery store layouts, floral shops, even textile, clothing, and the architectural structuring of buildings. Working in design apparel allows me to view everything as a form of art; the world is like one big beautiful canvas.” When she’s not shopping you can catch her tango dancing the night away or headed on an exotic adventure.
Her favorite Buffalo Exchange buys so far have been a vintage Lanvin printed velvet skirt, a silk printed bomber jacket with sporty ribbed trim by Sea NY, and a Cul dress with structured shoulder pads and an all over houndstooth print. Her favorite thing about Buffalo Exchange is finding those hidden gems, like her silver silk charmeuse Vera Wang dress with a train. She’s totally digging Florence and the Machine’s new album, enjoys Tom Petty & Muse. Her style inspirations come naturally due to her line of work. “I’m fortunate that my job requires me to follow trend forecasting sites so I’m aware of what’s out there.” “However, I don’t necessarily follow trends, but more or less items that speak to me and really get my attention is what I go for.” The best fashion advice she gives is to not take yourself too seriously. “Take risks, learn what does and doesn’t work for you.”
Interesting fact, she met her significant other while on a trip to Antarctica and loves dead pawn shopping. The go to items she cannot be without are her jewelry. In particular, the choker around her neck which consists of a chain fashioned from a men’s pocket watch and a locket pendant which features the Indian god, Shiva the Destroyer. It’s meant to break bad habits and is traditionally worn by men.
I can’t help but notice her amazing jewelry! The exquisite metal and turquoise necklace she wears around her neck is that of traditional Native American wedding ceremonies known as a squash blossom.
On her left wrist she wears a leather banded bracelet with pyramid shaped turquoise stones made by Joseph Brooks. She accompanies it with another vintage metal cuff containing more precious turquoise she found in New Mexico. On her middle finger is an almond shaped ring with a turquoise center and red jasper stones surrounding it. She also wears a heavy spiral like metal ring she purchased in Spain made by Mor.
Her right wrist is adorned by a vintage Mexican silver and onyx bracelet topped with a phenomenal handmade ring by Kd2024.
This mind blowing ring is the head of an eagle with a talon connected to a small stone. What makes this ring so special is the story behind it. At the time it was purchased, Olivera had a cancer scare; she explains “This ring holds symbolic meaning for me. I thought to myself, wow this is a really expensive piece. However, I’m not sure if I will be on this earth much longer so why not just spend the money and have something I can enjoy whether it be for the next six months or forever. For me it signifies that life is too short.”
